Tooling Engineering

Managing stainless steel work-hardening in stamping dies

Stamping stainless steel requires elevated press tonnages and precise clearance calculations to prevent premature tool wear.

1. Controlled Die Clearance (8%–12%)

Too tight a clearance causes intense secondary shearing and rapid punch wear; too loose causes excessive burrs. We calibrate clearances specifically to the austenitic work-hardening exponent.

2. Heavy-Duty Hardened Tool Steel

Our in-house tool room utilizes high-carbon, high-chromium tool steels (D2/AISI D2) heat-treated to 60–62 HRC to withstand the elevated compressive forces required to punch stainless steel.

3. Deburring & Passivation

Rotary tumbling removes sharp burrs to eliminate stress concentration notches, followed by chemical passivation to restore full corrosion resistance on raw sheared edges.

FAQ

Stainless steel stamping frequently asked questions

Why is stainless steel harder to stamp than carbon steel, and how does Space Auto Parts handle it?

Stainless steel work-hardens rapidly during blanking and bending, exerting up to 50% higher cutting tonnage on press tools compared to mild steel. We build our progressive dies with high-grade hardened tool steel (such as D2 and high-speed steel punches), maintain wider clearances (8% to 12% per side), and utilize rigid press guiding to prevent tool deflection and premature punch chipping.

Which stainless steel grades do you recommend for instrumentation vs automotive?

For instrumentation (such as pressure gauge housings and dial brackets), AISI 304 is the industrial standard providing superior corrosion resistance and clean aesthetic finish. For marine or corrosive chemical exposure, AISI 316 with 2% molybdenum is preferred. For magnetic sensor components or lower-cost automotive shielding, ferritic AISI 430 offers good formability without nickel cost volatility.

What stainless steel parts does Space Auto Parts manufacture?

We manufacture dial housings, spacer cups, transducer brackets, fluid pressure sensor mounting clips, and hostile-environment automotive brackets. We have been a trusted partner to WIKA Instruments since 2015.

Do you offer chemical passivation for stainless steel stampings?

Yes. Post-stamping deburring and acid passivation remove free iron particles embedded during press tooling contact, restoring the inert chromium oxide passive film per ASTM A967 standards.
